In the previous article, we talked about the changes made to the fire alarm sounders with the EN 54-14 2018 version. In this article, we will talk about the revisions made on detection zones.

Conventional systems detect zonally at the place where they are installed. For this reason, the size of the detection zone is very important for the detection of fire. In the old version of EN 54-14 standard, it was stated that the floor area of the largest area should not exceed 1600 m² in the conventional system. In the 2018 version of the EN 54-14 standard, this value was changed to 2000 m². Thus, the maximum area of the detection zone has increased with the new version.

According to the 2018 version of the EN 54-14 standard, for cases where there are more than one fire compartment in a conventional system, the zone boundaries should be the boundaries of the fire compartment and the zone floor area should be a maximum of 300 m². This value was 400 m² in the old version.

As can be seen, in the 2018 version of the EN 54-14 standard, changes have also been made regarding conventional zone areas. These changes should be taken into account while designing the fire detection system, and designs should be made on the current version.
