Which System Type For Fire Detection Is Suitable For You?

by Hakan Çakır
on 10 September 2019

Previously, I created an article in which two types of systems exist in fire detection systems and the differences between these systems. (Address and Conventional System Comparison – Which is Optional)

In this article, I will go through these system types again, and I will present you with a review to help you decide which system type is suitable for you.

Fire detection systems, which are an important part of all constructions, are; “Addressable” and “Conventional” systems consist of two types.

The most important distinction in these types of systems, which differ considerably from each other in terms of technology, is on the lines to which the devices are connected. In conventional systems, input devices such as detectors and manual call points are connected to unidirectional zone lines, whereas in addressable systems the devices are connected to a loop line where the line meets the panel again.

Schema: Sample Zone Line

When analyzed as a working principle; In a zone line of conventional type devices, an end-of-line resistor is placed at the end of the line. In the case of a fire, a fire signal is received from the zone line as the equivalent resistance of the zone line decreases as a result of the alarm resistance of the triggered or triggered device. In the addressable system; each of the devices connected to the loop has an address indicating its position and status. Error or fire status information occurring in any of these devices, which are queried in certain periods, is instantly reached at the point. Besides, when there is a fire, the devices can report the fire to the panel with an interrupt signal without waiting for the sequence to come to the loop query.

Briefly; while addressable systems allow the point of fire to be detected at a point, conventional systems report the source of fire zonally. Due to this important distinction, the addressable system is preferred in complex, multi-storey, large areas, industrial plants, chemical laboratories, server rooms where the slightest spark will end with the disaster in the face of fire danger, which is of great importance even for seconds to ensure the safety of life and property. Fire protection can be realized with conventional systems in smaller, easily controllable spaces.

If we take a look at the advantages of addressable systems,

– There is mechanical integration with other systems used in the site. In this way, pre-programmed fire scenarios within the scope of elevators, smoke dampers and so on. The status of many systems is monitored and can be commanded to perform the planned action.

– Because of the size of the location and provides different usage needs, it provides an opportunity to produce a wide range of fire scenarios. Delays can be assigned to output devices in line with these scenarios.

– The status of each device can be monitored and controlled from a single point. The availability of a single center of control is vital for large and complex structures.

– If there is IP camera integration in the software, the status of the location can be observed in real-time by the authorized person.

As a result; addressable and conventional systems should be preferred for the needs considering the various features, especially the size and controllability of the location.

Smart technology developments, which are felt in every field today, are also a very important issue for the construction and building sector. Addressable systems come to the forefront in areas where more capable systems are needed to provide security such as large living areas and large multi-storey centers.
